Door Furniture
This was an absolute pleasure to work on and is fundamentally the style of work that got me into blacksmithing. We often think of steel as being straight lines, simple design and general speaking hard. Work like this contradicts that directly with fine tapers, well considered negative spaces, movement, and lines that flow into each other effortlessly. This is double sided so is present on both sides of the gate. This defiantly gave some complications but that was all part of the challenge.
I've always liked working on pieces that involve oak leaves and acorns, a simple design which works really well... and plenty of power hammer work!!! These decorative panels will be fitted to wooden curves top gates (see sketch). The acorns are particularly fun and are made by wrapping 40x20 flat bar around 20mm round bar and fire welding the two together under the Massey. Main stock used is 40x15 for the bulk of the piece.
